A bill was previously passed to recognize May 22 as Bitcoin Pizza Day in the city of Porto Alegre in Brazil. Sebastião Melo, the city's mayor, is credited with approving the law around the end of August.

Councilors Jesse Sanjali and Alexander Popdra were responsible for drafting the bill after attending a Bitcoin Pizza Day event organized by the local community in 2022. Both were inspired by lectures they received explaining Bitcoin in detail.

Sangalli stated that the purpose of making Bitcoin Pizza Day official is to raise awareness of DeFi innovations in Porto Alegre, a city with a current population of 1.5 million people.

Bitcoin Pizza Day originated when a user from the BitcoinTalk forum named Laszlo Hanyecz offered 10,000 Bitcoin for two pizzas on May 22.

That day is seen as a turning point for cryptocurrency enthusiasts because it was the first time Bitcoin was truly used as a means of payment. One bitcoin was worth $0.0025 at the time, and the value offered in bitcoin cost $41 in total.
