GitHub now offers a free Foundations Certificate to students verified through GitHub Education, promoting skill development in collaboration and version control.
GitHub has announced an important initiative to support students by waiving the GitHub Foundations certification exam fee for those who are verified through GitHub Education, according to Official GitHub blog. The move is part of GitHub's ongoing efforts to enable students to develop skills in collaboration, version control, and other core software development practices without a financial burden.

The GitHub Foundations certification program is designed for newcomers to the GitHub platform, focusing on core concepts such as repository management, commits, branching, merging, and project management. It also covers contributions to open source projects and the use of markdown. How to start
Step 1: Verify
Students aged 13 or over, enrolled on a course or diploma course, are eligible for the GitHub Student Developer Pack. Verification involves filling out a request on the GitHub Education page, showing current enrollment. The process is straightforward, with guidance provided throughout.
Step 2: Prepare for your exam
The exam covers the core topics of collaboration and working on GitHub. Preparation resources, including study guides and FAQs, are available through the GitHub Foundations experience. Students can review these materials before attempting the exam.
Step 3: Take the exam
Students can register for the unproctored test through the GitHub testing provider, PSI. The test, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, can be taken at the convenience of the student within 60 days of registration. If students are unable to complete the test within this period, students may cancel without penalty.
Step 4: Get your credentials
Upon passing the test, students receive a digital badge from Credly, which can be shared on platforms such as LinkedIn or Facebook, boosting their professional profile.

Verified students have access to tools like GitHub Copilot for AI-powered programming suggestions and a GitHub Pro account with advanced features.
